WHAT IT IS
One stage, one room, and whoever turns up.
Every Monday night we gather in the Century auditorium for open mic. Sing karaoke. Play the song you wrote last week. Try out some stand-up. Read a poem, do a magic trick, or do something we haven’t thought of. If you can do it on a stage, it counts.
First-timers and regulars get the same welcome, and the room is on your side. Not performing? Come anyway. The audience is half of an open mic.
THE NIGHT
- 6:00 PM Doors open. Put your name on the sign-up sheet.
- 6:30 PM First act up, then down the list in sign-up order.
- 9:00 PM We wrap up, or earlier once everyone on the sheet has had a turn.
HOW IT WORKS
- Sign up at the door. First come, first served. There’s nothing to book ahead.
- Keep it PG. Open mic is all ages, and there may be kids in the room and on the stage. That goes for song lyrics too.
- Cheer for everyone. Everyone who gets up is taking a chance. Clap for the nervous ones loudest.
- Leave time for the next act. The sheet has to fit before 9:00, so keep your set short and let the next person have their turn.
QUESTIONS WE GET
- How do I get a slot?
- Put your name on the sign-up sheet at the door when you arrive. Acts go up in the order they signed, first come, first served. There's no booking ahead.
- What can I do?
- Anything. Karaoke, songs you wrote, covers, stand-up, poetry, a magic trick. If you can do it on a stage, it counts.
- What does it cost?
- Nothing. It's free to perform and free to come and watch.
- Can I just come and watch?
- Please do. An open mic is only as good as its audience, and the people on the sheet will be glad you came.
- Can kids come, or get up on stage?
- Yes to both. Open mic is all ages, so we ask every act to keep it PG. That's a house rule, and it covers song lyrics too.
- When does it finish?
- We start at 6:30 and go until 9:00 PM, or until everyone on the sheet has had their turn, whichever comes first.
